Real Peoples Company (RPC) is a young, contemporary brand that designs in a market where “African-made” bags are often beautiful, but not the most functional. Easily recognizable by its signature mesh weave, RPC designed and manufactured backpacks, laptop and travel bags that ranked effortlessly with counterparts made by the global North.
The opportunity to work with them on art direction and help translate the company’s value proposition was golden. I provided graphic design services in the form of social media visuals, campaign development, logo/brand collateral and copy-writing. Over time however it grew to include things like participating in meetings, shoots and many talks about refining the company’s positioning for the future.
RPC was my first in-depth look into the day to day grind of local creatives. It gave me fresh understanding of what it took to build a brand in Ghana.
My most meaningful contribution, perhaps, was not the design deliverables provided, but helping it evolve through clarity on its unfair advantage: being the only company of its kind that could make world-class backpacks, right from the heart of Accra. RPC ultimately made the pivoted from offering creative services as a multimedia company to focusing exclusively on developing its distinct range of bags.
By aligning itself with creative people who used their “Holders” (bags) to protect the tools they held dearest, RPC tells stories of young, forward thinking leaders who mirrored their courage to pursue big dreams and overcome the overwhelming odds against them.
